Youth Development
We believe in the youth of our community. Each one is created in the image of God. They are talented, intelligent, beautiful and special. We are so thankful that Godhas given us the opportunity to pour His love into these wonderful children. It is our mission is to train and equip a new generation of indigenous leaders who are driven by the love of God to pass on the torch of reconciliation, community and youth development in West Jackson. One of the ways in which we seek to fulfill our mission is through our youth programs. We have several programs that focus on the development of the youth in our community. Here at the Spencer Perkins Center we have a few ways in which we love our youth. We have several programs in which we love and engage our youth. We have an after-school tutorial program, summer camp, junior internships, Boys and Girls Clubs, and Good News Club. It is our passion to see our youth be the best they can be. Children from our neighborhood face crime and violence on a daily basis. Today, prisons are being built based on 3rd grade reading levels. 75% of prison populations cannot read above a 4th grade reading level. Fewer than half of the young girls in our community are predicted to get married, while more are predicted to have children. One in four of our children ar e born to teen mothers. Our youth in West Jackson navigate through violent neighborhoods, struggling schools and broken families. It is our goal to make the Spencer Perkins Center a safe haven for our children to have an opportunity to learn and grow. Our passion is with the children. We want them to grow into proud community members with integrity and character. |
